MEET: CLOWN WITH A FROWN, the best-selling pop/funk group
Clown With A Frown is one of the more popular bands in India, but if you’ve never heard of them before, you’re in for a surprise. With almost 10 members and brass instruments in the mix, Clown With A Frown is unlike any other band you’ve listened to in recent times. It’s a band that vows to bring back disco. And if you listen to their new album Love Intoxication, you’ll realize that they’re not kidding around.
Love Intoxication marks the starting of your sixth year in the scene. How have the last five years panned out for you?
The last five years have been a roller-coaster ride. From accommodating line up changes to re-shaping and defining the band’s sound and writing material for the album, it has been a challenging but rewarding experience.
You guys probably have more members and more changes in the band line-up than any other band. Has that affected your music and your goals, as a band?
All in all, we’ve had about 22 line up changes. It has affected the way in which we function as a band, but these changes have always been complimentary to our interests and aspirations. Everyone who has ever been a part of us has always contributed to the larger picture and has helped in the band’s success and developing its signature sound and style.
What is the band members’ favourite thing to do together (other than jam and perform)?
We travel a lot together. Random road trips and vacations are quite common and this has helped us gel and become a much tighter unit. We also love swimming together, playing badminton, pool parties, BBQ parties and even shop together for gig clothes.
What is your reaction to the amount of love you get from your fans?
Our fans are our biggest source of inspiration, encouragement and support. They have made us who we are today and we are forever grateful to each and every one of them. We have a personal connect with most of our fans, who have become friends and we love to hang out whenever possible. They are an integral part of our journey as a band.
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened on tour?
A lot of crazy things happen on tour. I don’t think I can make most of them public. But at one of our shows, a gentleman had asked us to play one of our songs, aptly titled ‘Cupid Voodoo’ and proposed to his girlfriend as we played it. It was a very special ‘awww’ moment for all of us.
What can we expect from you in the near future (fingers crossed for a music video)?
Yes, there is a music video coming soon and a massive surprise in the month of March 2017. Yes, it’s going to be a huge announcement. We’re going to be collaborating with some phenomenal musicians for some new music.
