Anirudh Ravichander only turns 26 today, but he’s already made an indisputable mark in the Indian music industry. Yes he’s churned out “mass” hits like Aaluma Doluma and Udhungada Sangu that have the Tamil youth waiting for more, but he’s also composed timeless masterpieces like Yennai Maatrum Kadhale. And if the Kaththi soundtrack isn’t the most brilliant Tamil movie soundtrack to come out in years, we don’t know what is.
Viral music videos usually come from one-hit wonders, but Why This Kolaveri Di was only the beginning for this versatile composer. It is also probably one of the only three times the western world has listened to Tamil music (the first being Benny Lava, a hilarious misheard lyric video of Kalluri Vaanil, and the next being Kodaikanal Won’t, rapper Sofia Ashraf’s protest against Hindustan Unilever set to the tune of Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda).
He’s infused everything from English lyrics, the rap genre and musical undertones from other cultures into Tamil mainstream music…successfully. So thank you Anirudh, for paving the way for all other young aspiring Tamil musicians.
