Listen to Akash Vincent’s new EP ‘Polaris’

It’s common for artists to try and strike the balance between creating something unpredictable and creating something satisfying — and horribly fail, to the point where they seem almost mutually exclusive. But every now and then, someone comes along to prove us wrong, to keep us believing in what most of the time seems like a myth.

Akash Vincent does just that in his new EP ‘Polaris’, right from the very first track, Who I Am. ‘Polaris’ is a lovely listening experience. Calling what he does singing understates the actual reality — perfectly comfortable with his voice, Akash plays with the music instead, almost cheekily, paying attention to the finer details.

Our pick: Anyway.

What are 3 important things to know about you?

I guess one aspect about myself that I hold as important is that I like to be on a learning curve always. I find joy in learning how a small detail can affect the big picture. And I love to create, be it writing songs, or cooking, or designing graphics.

It’s been almost three years since your last release. How do you feel you’ve grown as an artist since then?

A lot has changed since then. I’ve become much more aware of certain details that go into performance and production. I have a long way to go in learning how to mold the sound that I’m hearing in my head, both live and in the studio. And so I’ve been training my ears to go finer with these details. And as a result I’m also much more aware of my shortcomings and strengths at this point.

You say you don’t believe in “singer-songwriter” as a genre. What do you think about genres as a whole?

Categorizing music into genres definitely helps the listener. Certain times when people use the term ‘singer-songwriter’ as a genre, they’re already imagining all singer-songwriters to have the same sound. As long as they realise that ‘singer-songwriter’ can be used to refer to anyone from Anderson Paak to Gregory Porter, I don’t mind it at all. I like to believe I have more to offer than what they think of as ‘singer-songwriter’ music.

What inspires you?

I would say the obsession certain artists have towards their craft. And how effective they become in communicating through their art.

What do you have planned next?

I’m doing my best to help the ‘Polaris’ EP reach more people. I’ve also started looking into organizing a tour within India. I have to try and be creative with how I go about this since networking has been one of my weaker points.
